Women finally seeing signs of a jobs recovery

The Great Recession of 2007-09 included job losses that were so much greater for men than for women that some dubbed it the “mancession.”

But once the nation went into recovery – meaning the economy was expanding again, albeit slowly – men saw much stronger job gains than women. In fact women actually lost jobs in the first two years of the recovery, while men gained ground, according to a  Pew Research Center report.

Now there is evidence that the trend is evening out. Over the past few months researchers have started to see women gain jobs at a pace that is roughly on par with men.

In the last three months of the year, men and women each gained about 206,000 jobs, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“That’s definitely a new development,” said Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, which has been analyzing employment data by gender.

The job gains in the final months of 2011 were strong enough to offset the losses suffered in the earlier part of the recession. In December, about 43,000 more women were employed than when the recession ended in June 2009, according to the BLS.

“Finally, women moved into the black at the end of 2011,” said Joan Entmacher, vice president for family economy security at the National Women’s Law Center, which has been closely following women’s employment through the recession and recovery.

Still, Entmacher notes that women have gotten just a tiny portion of the net 1.4 million jobs that have been added since the recession ended.

The unemployment rate for men and women is now roughly even, mainly because the unemployment rate for men has dropped so sharply.

The unemployment rate for women 20 and over was 7.9 percent in December, which Entmacher noted is actually slightly higher than when the recession ended in June 2009.

For men over 20, the unemployment rate was 8 percent, down significantly from 9.8 percent in June 2009.

The news comes as the overall pace of job creation appears to finally be picking up speed. The nation's employers added about 200,000 jobs in December, according to the BLS, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent.

That’s encouraging, but it does not mean then the nation’s millions of jobseekers can breathe a sigh of relief yet. For a healthy jobs recovery, economists would still want to see much bigger monthly job gains and a lower unemployment rate for both men and women.

“It’s a slow jobs recovery for everybody. That’s disappointing,” Hartmann said. “We’ve seen some improvement in the last half of (the) year … but it’s a long haul.”

Although researchers couldn’t pinpoint a definitive reason for why women didn’t see job gains in the early stages of recovery, many said one cuts in state and local government funding were a likely factor. That led to job losses in sectors such as education and social services, where women are more predominant.

By contrast, she said, male-dominated industries such as manufacturing were among the first to see big job losses in the recession.

"The men’s recession happened earlier and their recovery happened earlier," Hartmann said. "The women’s recession happened later and their recovery happened later."

How difficult do you think it is to find a job these days?

It appears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that we are on a upward change in our economy. Right. Washington seems to be spear heading the great job recovery only with words and not with action. In a few days we will have another retraction in the head lines stating OPPS!!!!!! we made a mistake just like the housing report which came out a few weeks ago from the Realtor Association, then the truth get swept under the table. Oh the federal government has been using the Realtor Association and not checking up on it to see if it is accurate.

Auto 101: you have not read Rick Santorum's book. He said that NO woman ever needs to work, and only does so out of greed or at best, a misperception of need. Tell that to the women whose husbands ran out on them; to the widows of the wars he so blood lusts after and who have children to support...he doesn't care. Women should not work.

Deb is right. Santorum is getting vote from a good percentage of those on the far right so they must share his opinion.

Agree. Every time I read something like this article which points out the "recession of 2007 to 2009" it makes me laugh, or cry, or just feel sorry for the sheep that think it started that early and that 2010 was the "summer of recovery". Must be "journalists" live only in the world in which they read. If they think it started to recover after 2009, they are under a rock or the influence of Kool-Aid.

No jpeg, the right wing lost their "real American" creditability when they chose to protect the wealth 1% at the expense of the other 99%. You see. the wealthy 1% are not "real Americans" because they chose to take the jobs out of the country.

Maybe you should read Matthew 6 to understand the problem with this country.

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Our debt has NEVER been paid. We've had a national debt since the first day we were a nation.

You are correct in the absolute sense. But national debt hasn't exceed GNP before. If there the Fed wasn't printing money to keep interest rates down, then our debt situation would even be worse.

Our current budget trajectories have debt oligations and mandated spending choking out all else.

May be true if the woman is under 45, height-weight proportionate, excellent health, no family, great credit score with advanced degree. The dirty secret is the new generation Human Resource managers are very selective. Other than that it would be minimum wage and no benefits at less than 40 hours a week.

On the HR subject you are absolutely correct. They look only at those who have the same "qualifications" (perceived education etc.) first and foremost. Thus the reason so many older out of work people have such a hard time getting back into the system. Whether it is arrogance or just plain fear of going out on a limb for someone with extensive experience, I don't know. All I know is lately it seems you have to have a college degree in order to sweep floors.

These companies are trying to capitalize on the cheapness of youth.

With the more older and much more experienced employees these companies feel that they would have to pay them more for said experience, whereas no doubt the younger employee will be offered or accept a lower salary and may be satisfied with a title but no raise.

One thing though, after these corporations/companies/ employers in the USA have used up the youth of these newbies they will treat them no better than they have treated the older employees.... expendible and discardable.

Ah that Ode to lack of loyalty and honor...... in the USA.

Oh yes, women are finally seeing a job recovery, blah blah. Nothing real here, just more propaganda, smoke & mirrors. The Sunday job ads in my city at one time used to be over 12 pages long, filled with all kinds of positions aching to be filled. That was only about 5-6 years ago; now the Sunday ads comprise only 1/2 (if that) of a page and a lot of the ads are for retail, casinos, and fast food. Neither women or men are seeing any damned recovery!

You don't find many jobs -- good jobs anyway -- advertised in the Sunday paper. That went out of style years ago. You find jobs by networking, on the internet, directly on a companies's web-sight, and by using social media such as Facebook and Linked-in.

This economy is slowing turning around in spite of Republicans non stop effort to destroy it and then blame it on President Obama.

But after now 12 years after grad. school, NONE of my business colleagues or networking associates have done SH*T for me. This when they know i'm looking, and I've told them the kinds of positions i want...

Linked-In is just Facebook without the annoying wall posts. You've have gains business-wise (bottom line $) from Linked-In "opportunities". Pffph

Just because you apply online or find out about those jobs online, doesn't make it just as big of a mad-dash among 100 other applicants for the same position.

Stop the BS - A lot of people push the 'networking' crap and it does work. Yes your linkedIn profile better look good because the 20 year old kid in HR will look at that first. She just graduated filled with self importance so be aware. (Yeah, sorry folks HR is dominated by women.)

Fact is if a friend can get a resume in front of hiring manger you have a better chance however the hiring manager still has to get past HR.

But if you find a hiring manager and send your resume to them personally and invite them out for a cup of coffee to show them your 'value' many will trash can your resume. They don't have time for that crap.

Like you said - there is a ton of people looking for the same job and the ones working are afraid to do much else but their jobs and watch their backs. Resume writers and Job Hunting Gurus are making a small fortune off our misery.

Well -- first of all --avoid HR departments like the black death. Find out who is calling the short and go directly to them. Who is the department head. Find out all you can about that person. It's NOT easy but that's a good place to start. I've been in the private sector for over 40 years and NOBODY has ever asked me to work for them. You have to find a job yourself.

None of the above works. There are people in your network that would love to see you get a job yet, not where they work. No one wants to put their job on the line recommending you for a position in the company in which they work. If they hear of another place hiring, they will pint you to it and tell you it is okay to use them as a reference. As far as "stalking your future boss", as stated in an earlier post, they also don't have time nor the inclination to do so. If puts their rep on the line should something go wrong. They recommend you, they may also have to fire you if it doesn't work out. If they go through HR and THEY approve, take the monkey off their back should something go wrong. You are on your own whether all the guru's tell you you aren't or not.

What bs. Let's find an anomoly in data then hold someone responsible for it. Employment and many other things do not operate under a unified mechanism that assures everyone is employed or treated according to some idealistic theory. Consequenlty, anomolies exist - such as the job losses for men. In addition, I have never seen hiring decisions in the corporate world based on gender, race, nationality, etc. The attitude is one of hiring the best person available at the time the opening exists. This is fake news at best that is pandering to special interests.

Sure pjam-99 -- I don't understand heterosexuality!! That's why married my high school sweetheart for 43 years. I've hired females in my lifetime and not just for clerical work. NOT ONE of them was ever hired because of the way she looked.

You sound like some batter, nasty, lazy conservatives who loves to blame women or blacks or Hispanics or just about anyone else for your lack of success.

What about the Asians Charlie? You sound like a bitter old fat bald headed ugly fart that married the other ugly fat person in your school. Bet you said the same when Carter was President. Worst President in U.S. history according to every pole out there. Killing you isn't. Was that Obama sticker hard to get off your bumper? Women or Black or Hispanics! Your really sick! Does the white guilt keep you up at night?

The reason for this brain washing article is right at the top . The Pew Research Center , is telling you how to think . This article isn't about gender . It's a snow job , aimed at your brain .
Over and over again , we hear the true unemployment rate is 12 to 14% . Yet , they want you and I to believe it's 8.5% .

This is all about the 2012 election
They will be pushing these numbers down even more , as we get closer to the election .

To give you something to think about .
For years they've been crying about the number of people getting on Social Security .
As many people are trying to stay alive , and keep a roof over their head . They're choosing to take early retirement . Getting on Social Security early . With less money . It's like being under employed .

With each person retiring , this allows Pew Research , to say the unemployment is down .
With the number of early retirees , grabbing social security money now . The retirement age will be changed in the near future .

This brain washing tactic , be Pew and other . Will get Obama re- elected .
Say goodbye to America , and your personal freedoms . Just wait , we haven't seen change yet .

Ron - don't forget the record amounts on Social Security Disability. More that will push the numbers down. I do believe the labor pool is at 65% in our Nation. Meaning? That's right folks. 45% are retired, on SS, SSDI, or just plain given up.

How we going to compete with close to 1/2 the people in our Nation not working?

You're correct , almost 1/2 of the people are not working .
Very little is being said about the 53% who are still working . Still working underemployed , underpaid jobs .
The tax base for our nation is gone . What fools , some of you are . Looking to the rich , to pay the taxes . The working class needs to be paid and they pay the taxes .
This article is about jobs . Someone needs to write an article , we can believe .

Actual numbers for unemployed are stil high and rising. Obarry had 2,000,000 eliminated from the tax rolls to make the uninformed and ignorant believe things are improving. On top of that, you no longer count as unemployed if your unemployment benefits expire.

The only thing happening is a re-election campaign from Obarry and his media outlets. Between now and November,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,nothing bad will be reported and every possible lie about the economy will be reported as positive to get their messiah re-elected.

The good news is you can spin what happens in the street. People are having a hard time and they know it as they live it. In fact, this crap may just back-fire on the liberal media outfits like MSNBC.

Not that the Right is anybetter. Our Gov. is a dysfunctional corrupt Nation burning cancer and has to be stopped. Period.

Well I guess it's a good thing that the Dems prevented the Republicans from letting the benefits of so many expire. What gets me about guys like you is how you think you're the only ones who have ever worked hard. You know you benefit from society too! If not, please crawl back in your cave now!
